ROME, Italy – Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday society should pull together while dealing with the global financial crisis, as he met with Italian union officials.

"To overcome the economic and social crisis... we must surpass vested interests in order to confront together the problems affecting the different sectors of society and especially the working world," he said.

"The difficulties that have struck the working world prompt real cooperation and more support between the different elements of society," he added.

Benedict also said he hopes the financial crisis will lead to a "new culture of solidarity" and make people more responsible in their attitude and actions towards the planet.
