"Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a popular parish priest in a suburb of Warsaw, Poland spoke out against the abuses of communism

and supported the then banned Solidarity labor union.  He was abducted by the polish secret police on October 19, 1984.  His savagely beaten body was found 11 days later in an icy reservoir."

Suicide Car Bomb Kills U.S. Aid Worker in Iraq

Marla Ruzicka (28) American Green Party activist and aid worker known for her fearless dedication to human rights, who founded the Campaign

for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC), an organization that assists Iraqi victims of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, and who was in Iraq conducting

 door-to-door surveys to determine the number of civilian casualties, died in a car bombing on April 16, 2005.
